JoAnn and Joseph's South Texas Wedding at Wild August Flower Farm
When one of my good friends, Jane, asked me to photograph her little sister’s wedding, the most exciting part about the offer was that the wedding was happening in the Rio Grande Valley — a.k.a., my home! JoAnn and Joseph’s wedding at the Wild August Flower Farm in Harlingen, Texas was the first photo assignment I’ve had in forever that allowed me to crash in my childhood bedroom for the weekend. Any wedding that allows me to indulge in authentic tacos and mango margaritas is a winner in my book.
The wedding itself was gorgeous. Baby’s breathe and vibrant pink flowers decorated the tables at the farm, where the venue was set up to be both the wedding hall and reception room all at once. That’s the first time I’ve seen that and it made for a seamless transition between the two main events. On top of having a gorgeous cake, there were delicious frosted cookies and a beautiful, hand-made donut installation.
One of my favorite details of the day was JoAnn’s dress, which was her mother’s wedding dress before it was hers. It made the images of her mom helping zip up her dress all the more powerful. We took photos of her holding photos of her mom’s wedding day. At her house, we also took photos of her out in the family field—for a good five minutes at least, before chiggers and grasshoppers found a home inside JoAnn’s tule, haha.
JoAnn and Joseph had a huge wedding party that made for a great time during photos. Jospeh actually had ideas for his own portraits and the groomsmen photos (a first!) that drew inspiration from the days he was captain of the high school football team. The first look also went off without a hitch right in the beginning of golden hour — a photographer’s dream come true! And the ceremony itself was soaked in golden hues, adding to the beauty of everything.
Overall, the wedding was everything I look forward to at a traditional (and Christian) ceremony. The Lord’s presence was truly felt throughout the day; with prayer between JoAnn and her mother at the house before the wedding, scripture reading during the ceremony, and JoAnn and Joseph making a covenant to love each other well, with the support of their tight knit community. On top of that, you could feel both families’ support and love of the couple through every moment of the evening.
